Tesla’s upcoming Cybertruck is making waves not just for its futuristic looks, but also for its choice of materials. The all-electric pickup truck features a stainless steel body, which CEO Elon Musk describes as an “exoskeletal” design that offers superior strength and durability compared to its competitors. But what exactly is this stainless steel, and what are the tradeoffs in using it for the Cybertruck?

A Look at the Stainless Steel Used in the Cybertruck

According to Musk, the stainless steel used in the Cybertruck is an “ultra-hard 30X cold-rolled stainless-steel.” This refers to a modified version of the lean-alloyed austenitic 301 alloy, which is known for its strength and toughness. The alloy is cold-rolled to create a microstructure that includes austenite and martensite, resulting in a material that is highly resistant to corrosion and denting.

The Benefits of Stainless Steel for the Cybertruck

By using stainless steel, Tesla aims to create a vehicle that is not just strong and durable, but also highly resistant to corrosion and other forms of damage. The 3-mm-thick (.118-in) sheet specified for the Cybertruck is much thicker than the steel typically used in automotive body panels, which are usually on the order of 0.7mm to 1mm thick. This thickness, combined with the unique exoskeletal design, helps to create a vehicle that is highly resistant to dents and other forms of damage.

The Tradeoffs of Using Stainless Steel for the Cybertruck

While stainless steel offers numerous benefits for the Cybertruck, it also comes with some tradeoffs. For example, the cold-rolling process used to create the material makes it very strong but sacrifices ductility and formability. This means that the material is difficult to shape and mold, which limits the types of panels and character lines that can be created.

Additionally, the Cybertruck’s exoskeletal design means that the outer body of the vehicle contributes to its structural strength, rather than relying on traditional body-in-white design principles. This can create a polarizing appearance that some find futuristic and Blade Runner-cool, while others see as crude or unrefined.
